Kitchen cupboards almost a reality!!
We accepted the latest submission for our kitchen cupboards!! I am so excited. They do a final measure on Tuesday and then we play the waiting game.....8 weeks!! And of course with the construction holiday that means sometime in the early part of September. Not too happy about that but what can you do. Oh well,
lots to do in the meanwhile. The new kitchen window can go in, need to rip out a portion of the kitchen wall for the new entry to the bathroom and laundry room and seal up the old door, do the electrical, plumb in a gas line for the stove and.....hmmmm.... looks like 8 weeks may be necessary?
Our "workie" is saying that the floors are better installed before the kitchen cupboards....but I don't agree.

How is the project progressing? Have you finalized the appliances?
Your trades are on vacation now, yes? Any updates?

OMG....the waiting game!
Yes, as you know, everything comes to a complete halt at this time of year. I have been stressing out on the windows and finally decided that I will go with wood. I just can't see that white PVC fitting in with the rest of my home.
I painted the existing island in BM Cloud White and it looks fantastic sooo.....I am really happy that the cupboards will be painted in Cloud White. The cupboards arrive, apparently, around the 15th of August. At that point things will go crazy. The debate is still on as to whether you put down floors first or install cabinets first. The guy doing the work says that he prefers that the floors go down after the cupboards are installed. He claims there is no reason to run hardwood floors under the cupboards....and I tend to agree.
I want to keep the hood cabinet that goes over the stove since I love the design and feel it is original to the house so it has a bit of character. Now though I need to figure out what type of fan I can find to go inside the hood for the new gas stove.
So, as you can see, lots to do! I cannot wait to see where I am at in exactly one month.

LIM
Sounds like things are at least in progress - I'm in the same situation but you are definately way ahead of me - haven't even ordered cabinets yet nor do I have a final concept ... living in temporary accommodation. Enough about me!
I've always put the floor down under the cabinets in 3 kitchen's I've done - not quite sure why but was told to do so and somehow it just seems more "finished" even though no-one can see it!
Glad you went with wood windows.

RE: Kitchen cupboards almost a reality!!
I know a lot of people have them under their cabinets but a lot of tradespeople that I talk to say that it is really not necessary. Anyway....
I put my old cupboards on kijiji for sale at a give-away price, along with the sink and countertop. I figure if somebody wants to buy them for their cottage then they can pick them up and give me a little extra cash for my "new stove fund".
Today, I go through and purge what I can from the cupboards and in two weeks our contractor will arrive to start the demo process and re-configure the kitchen wall and close up the present door to the bathroom and move it over to the new spot. I hope I have made the right decision with that part of the design. A lot of my friends don't get my idea but I think they will once it is all done.
Fingers crossed.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final product too. One thought though was to run the flooring under the cabinets. That's what I would do because it makes it easier and faster to install and if ever you go to move something - it looks better.

Our next project will be the kitchen and I'm going to have to explore the cost of made our way versus off the rack.. Any thoughts from you would be appreciated.

RE: Kitchen cupboards almost a reality!!
no problem.
we went with custom made and in the end it was not really a big difference in price. Of course, all the walls in our house are wonky so it only made sense to measure and have them made to fit. It has been a long waiting process though and unfortunately that has given me time to think "too" much. I will be happy when it is all complete. The designer that we hired though has really been great! She has helped me maintain sanity.

Good that's what I wanted to hear. I have some ideas that I want to incorporate into the design and I was thinking that I would not be able to accomplish that with off the rack.
