bottom freezer models
I have owned a bottom freezer model fridge for about 5 years now. All of a sudden the food in the crisper, which is just above the freezer, is freezing. I have played with the settings now for the last month and no change. While shopping for our new stove, I asked about this problem in one store and the guy said, 'oh, yes, that has been a problem in the past but they fixed it about 3 years ago and now that won't happen with any of the bottom freezers. I then went into Sears, again looking at stoves, but asked about this same problem with the fridge and she was completely surprised, no idea, never heard of any problems like that and said perhaps I got a 'lemon'.
So,any ideas out there. Is it a problem, was it ever a problem or what? My DH wants to get a new fridge with this kitchen renovation but I am really worried about buying another bottom freezer. The problem of course is....what to buy?

I would first try going to the manufacturer's website and see if there have been any recalls or go to a reputable repair shop and see if there have been any technical service bulletins that would cover your problem. Try them as a "free" way to go.

If you decide on the new one Consumer Reports is high on the Amana brand and if you want them I do have the serial numbers.

So, maybe the guy at the one store was right when he told me that they fixed that problem within the last few years. He claimed that it was fixed about 3 years ago and that it had been a problem in several of the makes.
I have gone on several forums and it is not clear. I want a larger fridge than what we have but I am really nervous about ending up with the same problem. My husband likes the idea of a side by side but my sister claims they are too narrow.

Ours is also a bottom feeder and no problems in two years. We love it.

I had a side by side in the last house and I hated it you couldn't get anything in it and it was a big one. I love the bottom freezer loads of room I would spend the extra and get the counter depth if I had known about them when I bought mine. My SIL just bought the Electrolux and it is a beauty. I have the water dispensor inside in mine which is what I wanted I have a RO water system so I don't need the water in the fridge.

RE: bottom freezer models
Any chance you have the rest of your fridge packed a little tighter than usual? Freezing in the crispser or larger food area is often because when the fridge is full of food and the air can't circulate properly (especially when bigger items are at the back) and so things start to freeze. Doesn't seem to matter the style of fridge or where the freezer is as much as making sure air can circulate in all areas of the fridge including:
- not packing the crispers too full
- not shoving stuff to the back wall where most of the air is supposed to be able to move freely up and down between shelves and compartments.

As for a new model. They do make side by sides that have different sized doors now so the top may be narrow (as they are traditionally) but the rest is wider to accommodate things like pizza and other wider items. Hm.. just checked the Sears site and didn't see one but you may want to ask as they showed me one when I was buying 3 years ago.

This is the first house I've had with a side by side and it's an older one. I quite like it compared to the top freezer versions I am used to. It just seems to hold more in a more organized fashion and I lovvvve the ice maker. Never had one of those before but it is now a must have for me. Heaven help me if I ever discover the water in the door model as I have a feeling I would love that completely.

I had the same problem with my side-by-side refrigerator-freezer. It was a faulty relay switch or something in the freezer that was letting too much cold air into the refrigerator part (I can't remember the exact description of the problem).
