green thumb ???
Well while I watch the snow fall and melt as it hits the ground I am thinking of the garden.
I have had good luck before starting annuals indoors from seed. To me it is the fun of it. I have choosen these- one for the fence and one for the planters. A deep red double bloom trailing nasturtium and a double bloom 2 tone morning glory. "Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened." |

RE: green thumb ???
I want to try morning glories too Pearl. I have this great spot that I thought they would work since I believe they need a lot of sun. How many seeds do you use to get a good healthy crop of them?
oops....I think I am revealing my not so green thumb?! There are exactly as many special occasions in life as we choose to celebrate. |

RE: green thumb ???
We have been plotting out on paper where we will plant in this yard as it is new. We did plant anything last year because the fence wasn't up and the deer and sheep eat everything. We now have a 6 foot high solid board fence and they haven't attempted to jump it so I think we are good to go on the planting.
Our wood shed has slats on the sides for air flow to dry the wood and I think it would be a perfect spot to grow a climber. The one side faces East and the other West I had thought Sweet Peas on the the East side and Scarlet Runner Beans on the West.I love the Scarlet runners you get very pretty flowers with lots of greenery and food to eat. On the North side of the house I want to put in Hostas and some ferns. DH has 4, 4X4 wooden planters for veggies we have one planted already with garlic the others we will put salad vegs and some carrots and beets. We can't plant anything outside here until after the full moon at the end of May. The front yard is the challenge because we can't fence it and the animals are around all the time today there were about 15 Big Horn Sheep on my front lawn. |

How many seeds do you use to get a good healthy crop of them? I ordered these from Vesey's http://www.veseys.com/us/en/store/flower...seserenade They are a little expensive but you can collect the seeds from the seed pods for use another year. A large garden centre may stock the Sunrise Serenade Morning Glory seeds. I found in the past that their seeds germinate well. I found if I nick the hard shell of the seeds first and soak overnight in warm water they germinate quicker. Once they have sprouted roots I lay them on soft soil and cover only about 1/8". I use the tiny peat pots and just plant the pot once the weather is warm enough to plant outside. "Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened." |

RE: green thumb ???
They might be the answer for my back corner we have a power pole inside the fence and DH hates looking at it. I could plant the Morning Glories in apot with the stakes and they would grow quite tall to hide the pole. It is a thought I will put to DH and see if they are something he likes, he is the gardener so it has to be something he likes.

RE: green thumb ???
Great! I think I will try that. Do you think I could do these in a large iron urn?

RE: green thumb ???
Gee those are nice! Here I am in gardening heaven (for me) and really am only interested in planting things for pots and window boxes (the rest of the yard has perennials and I am not investing in any for some landlord). The way those are climbing would be great in the pots I have around here (there must be a dozen of various sizes all over the patio).
I wonder if I could just plant seeds now? I noticed some flowers are already out in some yards (and mine is full of purple crocus... call me in heaven). FYI for those of you who don't get the Veseys' catalogue. It says on the cover of the one I recently got that if you order $50 (by phone or online) or more they will deduct $25 off the order. Offer expires May 26 and you "use department SB251" to get the discount (one per household). I've ordered hostas and such from them before and they were great. I even got some replaced when a couple didn't come up the next year, no hassle at all....just noticed, it's the bulbs, perennials and roses & shrub catalogue only... bummer when I all I need is annuals. |
